1st Sunday in Lent, February 26, 2012

Salvation history finds its culmination in the person of Jesus. This history is unfolded in or through 7 major covenants. As we begin 2012 season of Lent, church gives us for our liturgy of the word , the example of the covenant - God enters into with humanity through noah. It is for all the Christians a type of baptism in NT. Lent calls us from busy occupations of our life’s to wonder not only about the fact that we need help and forgiveness for our sins, lent also is the liberating deliverance; a gift that helps us to see ourselves more clearly. Not only Mark, but Matthew and Luke also wrote of the famous 40 days of Jesus in the desert. After that time, Jesus begins his public ministry. Our Lord is tempted. Why? Because of the HYPOSTATIC UNION -  because He is both God and man. One of my favorite writer writes so beautifully about temptations that Jesus experiences. He writes that these 3 temptations govern the whole of human history. They underline the conditions of and in each of us. The temptation of the bread speaks about desire of our bodies to be spoiled. Generation of my grandma- kiss the bread that falls on the ground. The temptation of a “leap from the temple” suggests of how anxious we are to forget our human conditions. We want to fly off by getting high. We numb ourselves to the reality that surrounds us from the adults to children we want to escape the reality of here and now. The temptation of becoming equal to God. We want to dominate, over power those who are weaker, more vulnerable. In the contest between Jesus and Satan in the gospel, the final score was Christ 3- Satan- 0. How is it about me and Satan? What is the score as of now between Satan and I? Lent- the change of seasons-the change of hearts. We are asked to use this time of Lent wisely. Let us make it a time to settle our own score with temptations and Satan. Remembering the final score was Christ 3 and Satan ZERO!
