33 Sunday in ordinary time, November 13th, 2011

The reading for the 33rd sun directs our eyes toward the coming of our Jesus’ end and fulfillment of salvation history. The intent is to stress the importance of HERE and NOW -  of the present time. To make the best use of it always remembering that the past is just a history, long gone, the future is in the clouds. It’s unknown but what is real is the present time here and now. The other meaning of the word present is a gift and my friends, now more than ever we need to be that gift to one another. The OT Book of Proverbs is not the longest of the OT books. It contains shorts sayings, maxims some of them are extremely ancient. Our beloved St. Paul speaks about the Day of the Lord. How to be ready for that day? What to do, so such a day will not surprise us? The bible gives us the answers it is a manual of our journey. Bible=Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth. Today’s parable is the last that Jesus delivers before he enters Jerusalem for the fulfillment of his mysteries. In today’s gospel, Christ teaches us what to do in preparation for his second coming. He teaches us how to keep vigil, how to wait in expectation. It is not a passive waiting, but killing time. To keep vigil, is to prepare for the expected is the best way. Was he afraid of what’s going to happen? Was he afraid of the master or even worse; was he afraid of finding out that he really is or might become? Was he just killing time, being lazy or indifferent? My friends, fear as you know it can motivate us bit is an also paralyze us completely. Fear: False Evidence Appearing Real that’s all it is, someone said so well. What had happened then to our biblical servant? Was it fear that paralyzed him? Did he really know the master? He said: I know you! He knew the master, and for some reason, still froze. Waiting for something to happen and nothing happened. My friends, saints of the church didn’t wait. They didn’t wait because they knew the master. The intimate knowing enabled them to be courageous, active. He understood the well importance of time of here and now. And although time exists only in a relation to mass when we waste it. For whatever reason, we might find ourselves very surprised at the end of our journeys. Many of us, my friends, could have said to the lord, who and I lord? Its too big of a task for me, im so insignificant. Could you imagine St. Francis of Assisi would ever said that to the Lord? What if he said, I am no one? Who am I? I am so insignificant to do what you are calling me to do. Could you imagine if mother Theresa would ever said that to the world. Who am I? If John Paul II said that to the Lord? You are blessed with so many gifts, never, ever bury them deep. It is true we do not receive the same gifts. But we all supposed to give life a first class run with our gifts. The ultimate aim of Christian life is not to fear, but to know the master and that’s why not to fear him. In other words, the aim of Christian whatever it is.
