Safe Enviornment

The Diocese of Bridgeport’s Policy on Safe Environments

Summary of Safe Environment Requirements for all Clergy, Lay Employees, Volunteers,
Parent Volunteers, and Independent Contractors.

Everyone who works or volunteers for the Diocese or any parishes or programs must attend an awareness training session.

  1. Attend Virtus Protecting God’s Children Awareness Training on Child Sexual Abuse Prevention. This is required before working or volunteering and includes vendors, renters, and independent contractors (ages 18+).

For the Virtus training session, just log on to Virtus and click on “Registration”. At this point, you can view the upcoming sessions. To continue with the registration, click on “Begin the registration process”. On the next screen select “Bridgeport”.  You will be asked to create a user id and password. If you do not have internet access, call Erin Neil to pre-register 203.416.1406.

  2. Background Checks (ages 18+). The authorization form must be completed and returned to the school or parish office where you work or volunteer, and not necessarily where you attend your Virtus class. The parish or school will conduct the background check and it must be completed before working or volunteering.

    a.  Sign Background Release Form: For questions related to background checks or to confirm if a background check was completed, please contact Human Resources 203.416.1402.

  3. Download and read safe environment policies:

    a.  Sexual abuse policy:  click here

    b.  Code of Conduct Policy:  click here

Print, sign and attach to paperwork showing you have read these policies. Return both signed policy receipts to your school or parish office before you begin volunteering.

Volunteers that have taken The Safe Environment course and backgrounds within a 5 year date do not have to renew anything. Volunteers can go online and complete the re certifications - instructions can be found in the forms below. Volunteers are responsible for their own background checks and anyone that cannot remember their username can call the rectory for it. This needs to be done by April 1st

If you completed Virtus in another diocese you must submit proof of your training to the Safe Environment office and you will need to have your record transferred to the Diocese of Bridgeport by calling Virtus at 888.847.8870. A background check and new policy receipts must be submitted to your new school or parish as these do not transfer from diocese to diocese.
